OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Cyber, a model built to find and exploit security flaws in software. For now, only approved customers in its Daybreak Red program, which covers authorized security testing, can use it through the API and Codex. In testing it found 81 previously unknown serious flaws in Firefox, and Mozilla has started fixing them. OpenAI rated it a “Critical” cybersecurity risk, the highest level on its scale.

Why it matters

A model like this can help close holes in software you use every day before attackers find them. But the same power can be used to attack, which is why OpenAI limits who can use it, and experts warn that many of the flaws it found are still unfixed.

For the technical crowd

In the Linux kernel it reproduced 1,724 vulnerabilities and built working exploits for 948; OpenAI has reported 304 critical findings to maintainers. On the ExploitGym benchmark it scored 48.5%, versus 32.1% for GPT-5.6 Cyber. In a honeypot test it stayed within authorized limits 99.93% of the time without a safety prompt, and 100% with one. According to OpenAI's Patch the Planet dashboard, fewer than 25% of the flaws found have been fixed.
